I came to rugby, or it came to me, through my school days at Hurlstone Agricultural High. I then had a season with the Dubbo Kangaroos (great fun) before setting off to university. At Sydney University, while studying law, I played for that great club for a number of years, first in Colts and later in the top grades. I had many mentors there including Wallabies Jake Howard, John Coolican, Declan Curran and Chris Carbery all of who helped me learn the dark secrets of front row play. Leaving University I went to try my hand at Randwick where I was fortunate to play over 100 games, including a number in the First XV. Here I was introduced to and seduced by the influence of Geoff Mould and his protogees the Ella's, Lloyd Walker and a host of other wonderful players who embodied the spirit of running rugby. I played under Bob Dwyar and with Eddie Jones. The years at Randwick turned me to a disciple of the running game. When I left to pursue a legal career at Albury on the Murray River I played for and coached the local team, the Albury Steamers. A self confessed rugby tragic I am an avid, perhaps even addicted student of the game. I am also an apostle of Michael Lewis' Moneyball and believe that much of the so called wisdom of players, coaches, scribes and fans is purely subjective, unsupported by analysis and frequently wrong. This unfortunately does not stop this wisdom gaining widespread acceptance to the detriment of performance at all levels, even in the National side. There are many questions to be asked and true answers to be sought. This is the purpose of this blog. Now off to the 2023 RWC and you can read about it in the pages below. |
