Rebels & Tahs Launch Steamers New Era
The Steamers launched their 2014 Season with a rocket when the Melbourne Rebels took on the NSW Waratahs in front of a big crowd at the magnificent Albury Sports Ground. The day kicked off with a Sportsmans' Lunch for 250 with Tim Gavin (47 cap Wallaby) topping the billing after a line of distinguished speakers. Then the Quick Fire Rugby 10's final resulted in a drawn match between Boxhill Rugby Club and the Albury Thunder with Boxhill getting the prize money curtesy of a count-back. Next the first ever game between Super Rugby Teams in Albury kicked off and the big crowd were treated to an entertaining game where first the Tahs dominated, then the Rebels struck back to take a commanding lead before a last ditch Tahs effort fell just short of snatching the game. The final score was Rebels 33 Tahs 28 with the Border Rugby Supporters being the big winners as the Super Rugby stars stayed on to chat with the crowd (including many excited youngsters), sign autographs and allow numerous photo opportunities. The day which resulted from a collaboration between the Steamers, The Albury Tigers and the Albury City Council was a credit to all involved.
The Sportsmans' Lunch
A great lunch, fine food, plenty of refreshment on a hot day and entertaining speakers in a great venue.
Taking all the people at this lunch in their prime we could make a great Steamers side ( some guests allowed). There is s prize for the best side picked from those present at this lunch. Blindside's decision will be final and no dissent considered.
The Rugby, first quick fire 10's then Super Rugby Action
The Steamers didn't get into the final but they had some good wins and welcome hit out against some good opposition.
